Web Design or Web Developer: What’s the Difference?

Wondering if you can start a web design business with your current skills but left confused because you don’t know the difference between a web designer and a web developer? Well, in this blog post we talk about what web designing is and you’ll have a complete comparison between web design vs web development!

When I first became interested in web design, I’ll be honest, I had no idea if I could start a web design business without knowing any code. Whether or not I could legitimately start my own web design company and BUILD websites was a question I asked myself frequently.

Could I take my skills and start my own company without knowing to code? The short answer. Yes.

But first, it’s important that you also understand the difference between a web designer and web developer so you don’t continue your journey completely confused!

Web Developer

What is a web designer?

Technojobs explain what a web designer is in the best terms: “A web designer is an IT professional who is responsible for designing the layout, visual appearance, and the usability of a website.”

Basically, a web designer is responsible for the actual design of the website. Where the content is placed, how it looks aesthetically, and how a website visitor navigates from one section or page to another section or page.

Typically a web designer uses tools like Adobe Illustrator to design mockups of the website. After a web designer has actually completed these designs, their job is done. They then hand those mockups off to a web developer who takes over from there.

So what exactly is a web developer?

According to Technojobs, “A web developer is often more likely to be a software developer who works with programming languages to create a higher level of interactions on a website such as the integration with a database system.”

A web developer takes the designs the web designer has created and turns them into a live website using code. They’re responsible for the actual functionality of the website and the backend tech.

Do you need to know the code to build a website?

The short answer, no. The skillsets of a web designer and web developer are completely different but today’s technology allows web designers to take their visual representations of a website and turn them into an actual working website.

This means that you as a single person can start a web design business where you design and build websites from start to finish for your clients without needing the outside help of a developer who knows to code!
